Pinetum: a collection of pine trees or other conifers for scientific or ornamental purposes.
Within the circular entry drive lies the quiet solitude of the Pinetum, a collection of unusual dwarf and slow growing evergreen conifers, given as a gift to the Rodebaughs from noted horticulturist Philip A. Livingston in 1972. Enveloping two small, elliptical lawns, the Pinetum provides year-round interest with a variety of textures and shapes. It is perhaps most striking in winter when the snow contrasts with the evergreen foliage colors and textures.
The collection is focused on unique species and cultivars of Picea, Pinus, Chamaecyparis, Crytomeria, and Juniperus, and others, particularly dwarf forms and those with variegated, golden, or blue foliage. New specimens continue to be added since the cultivar selection is broader than it was when the garden was first created.
