Hopewell Big Woods

The last large, unbroken forest left in southeastern Pennsylvania, Hopewell Big Woods is one of the most important natural areas in the region.

Hopewell Big Woods encompasses over 73,000 acres-or 110 square miles-of intact forests, abundant streams and wetlands, and unique cultural & historic sites.  Centered on French Creek State Park and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, this landscape provides clean air & drinking water to residents; scenic recreational opportunities to visitors, and vital shelter to hundreds of plant and animal species.

Welkinweir’s natural areas are an important part of the larger Hopewell Big Woods open space.  Green Valleys Watershed Association is a proud partner in the Hopewell Big Woods Partnership, an initiative to conserve and educate the public about this region.  The Horse-Shoe Trail, which winds through Welkinweir’s forests, offers connections to this landscape for hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders.
